The federal government says a California tribe opened a short-lived casino despite repeated warnings that its legal authority to operate was under review.
On Friday, a Department of Justice attorney told a federal judge that the Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians knew the Interior Department could reverse an earlier determination that its Vallejo land was eligible for gaming.
Despite those warnings, the tribe opened its “Preview Casino” on July 24, offering Class II gaming out of modular structures.

The Detroit Free Press reported on Wednesday (Sept. 16) that a water tower located northeast of the downtown city was recently painted and branded with Polymarket’s likeness. The water tower is located just off Interstate 94 at Mount Elliott Street, Exit 217.
The water tower is specifically located at the business of Mount Elliott Crushing, a recycler of concrete products. While the water tower is on private land, the City of Detroit requires that permits be secured for advertisements on such structures.
A city spokesperson told the Detroit Free Press that no such permit has been granted for the Mount Elliott Crushing water tower. The city spokesperson said someone from the Buildings, Safety, Engineering, and Environmental Department would be sent to the property for an inspection and “possible correction order.”

The Upper Sioux Community also argued that, as a sovereign tribal nation, it is not subject to Minnesota utility regulations. The commission declined to rule on the sovereignty question, concluding it was unnecessary to resolve that issue to determine that Minnesota Valley could not prevent the casino from generating its own power.
An attorney for Minnesota Valley told commissioners the cooperative plans to appeal the order.
